Not present: John Rice. We reviewed a draft of the Structural Framework for Planning and Assessment that is being developed by the ɫɫ Strategic Planning Committee and discussed how our committee will work with faculty to measure, analyze, and assess teaching as it fits into Frame 4 of the framework. Chair Bentley presented an overview of Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs), taken from Angelo and Cross (1993). Classroom assessment is both a teaching approach and a set of techniques to help instructors see what their students are learning. The techniques are simple, non-graded, and anonymous activities that give students and instructors feedback on the teaching-learning process. The committee looked at sample CAT forms that can be used early in the course, mid-way, and at the end of a course and discussed how ɫɫ instructors might use these forms to assess their teaching and student learning. The committee is enthusiastic about introducing these techniques to the ɫɫ faculty as a way to help faculty get immediate feedback on the teaching and learning process, assess student learning, encourage the idea that teaching is an ongoing process, and help students become better monitors of their own learning. The committee discussed ways to keep online submissions anonymous, such as using a survey program like Survey Monkey. We will explore other ideas in the coming months. The committee will review different types of CATs and develop a checklist that faculty can use to assess teaching and learning. We will also work on developing a Web page with Susannas help. The committee is also developing an in-service training for faculty to be held during the fall 2009. Chair Bentley sent the committee members links to several Websites to explore to get more information about Classroom Assessment Techniques, and Susanna Dorr will make these available to all faculty through the Assessment Committee report on the Faculty Senate Webpage.
