Child and Family Center Classroom

A positive classroom environment is essential for the success of an early childhood program.聽The physical arrangement of each classroom accommodates different learning areas or centers, which serve to teach and enhance cognitive and social skills. Large and small group activities take place in each classroom.聽Each student has a cubby for his/her coats, back packs, etc., while in the classroom. All Classroom bulletin boards are child created. Classroom centers include the following:

Language Arts Center

Purpose:聽Through the Language Arts activities children develop oral language, listening skills, vocabulary, letter recognition, rhymes, phonemic awareness, reading readiness skills, social skills, sight vocabulary, writing skills, and a positive attitude about reading.

Library Corner

Purpose:聽In the Library Area, children are exposed to emergent literacy skills, oral language, and listening skills.聽The Library also helps them develop a growing love and respect for books.

Science and Math Area

Purpose:聽In the Science Center, children are able to experiment, solve problems, make decisions, explore concepts about science and nature, improve language, interact socially as well as develop sensory skills.

Purpose:聽In the Math Center, children learn counting, grouping, comparisons, patterns, time, money, measurement, addition, subtraction, geometric shapes, small motor skills, problem solving and social skills.

Creative Art Center

Purpose:聽The Art Center enhances creative expressions, social skills, oral language, small and large motor skills, cooperative skills, imagination, and concepts about size, shape, texture, and color.聽Children find aesthetic pleasure through the experience of creative art.聽We believe that the 鈥減rocess is as important as the product.鈥�

Art Easel

Purpose:聽The art easel allows for creative expression, small and large motor skills, visual perception, oral language, imagination, and color and size concepts.

Dramatic Play

Purpose:聽In the dramatic play center, children learn cooperative play and social skills.聽Children learn to organize and create their own play.聽For young children, dramatic play and learning are not separate.聽The children learn by accommodating their experiences, and then assimilating them.聽The Dramatic Play experience also allows creative expression.聽

Block Area

Purpose:聽Children develop concepts of number, size, shape, space and weight by playing with blocks.聽They also improve manipulative skills, fine motor skills, language, social skills, self-confidence, and derive personal satisfaction from their creations.聽

Sand and Water

Purpose:聽Sand and Water experiences provide children with sensory awareness while developing math concepts, science concepts, small motor skills, social skills and language.聽Sand and Water play provides a calm and soothing experience for young children.

Music and Creative Movement

Purpose:聽Through Music, children improve auditory discrimination, verbal expression, motor skills, and creativity.聽Children acquire rhythm through creative e movement as they listen and move to a variety of tempos and beats.

Manipulative

Purpose:聽In the Manipulative Area, children develop small motor skills, eye-hand coordination, increase attention span, visual perception, and build concepts about size, shape, color, and pattern.
